Why AI text sounds like AI

Language models pick the most likely next word, again and again. The result is fluent but flat: sentences of similar length, safe vocabulary, and the same handful of transitions. Readers notice it even when they can’t name it, and AI detectors measure it directly.

The fix isn’t fancier words. It’s making the text less predictable and more specific, which is what human writing naturally is.

1. Cut the stock phrases

Search your draft for these and delete or replace them: moreover, furthermore, delve into, in today's rapidly evolving, it is important to note that, plays a crucial role, a testament to.

Before: It is important to note that excessive usage can significantly impact concentration.

After: Too much scrolling wrecks your focus.

2. Vary sentence length

AI writes in a steady 18–25 words per sentence. People don’t. Follow a long sentence with a short one. Like this. It changes the rhythm instantly and it’s the single biggest signal detectors look at.

3. Swap abstract for specific

Replace “various educational resources” with what you actually mean: lecture recordings, a classmate’s notes, a YouTube explainer. Specific nouns are hard for a model to guess and easy for a reader to picture.

4. Use your own examples

Add one detail only you could know. A class you took, a project that went wrong, a number from your own research. A single personal example does more than a paragraph of polish.

5. Pick a side

AI hedges: “there are advantages and disadvantages.” Say what you think and why. A clear claim reads as a person with a point of view.

6. Prefer plain verbs

“Utilize” → use. “Facilitate” → help. “Demonstrate” → show. Plain verbs are shorter, clearer and far more common in human writing.

7. Break the three part list habit

Models love groups of three: “clear, concise and compelling.” Use two items, or four, or just one strong one.

8. Read it out loud

If a sentence makes you run out of breath or sounds like a press release, rewrite it the way you’d say it to a friend, then tidy the grammar.

9. Check, then fix only what’s flagged

Run the draft through an AI detector that highlights sentences. Rewrite the red ones, leave the green ones alone, and check again. If you’re short on time, the AI humanizer does edits 1–7 automatically and shows your before/after score.

The short version

  • Delete stock transitions and buzzwords.
  • Mix short and long sentences.
  • Be specific and add your own examples.
  • Check sentence by sentence and fix only what’s flagged.

And follow your school’s rules on AI tools. The goal is writing that sounds like you because it reflects your thinking.
